A sub-genre is a category that is a subdivision of a larger genre.
The Rock Music Genre for example multiple sub-genres such as
Pop Rock , Glam Rock, Rap Rock , Acid Rock ,Country Rock and Death Rock
and the list continues into up to a hundred different types of Rock sub genres.
Within genres there are sub-genres which allows music to have the same basic elements, but different components. Genres are divided up into more specific categories that allow audiences to identify them specifically by their familiar and what become recognisable characteristics.
